My Final Post for 2015

We've come to the end of our journey at Saint Pius X Catholic School.  Our journey's  here at Saint Pius X has been challenging because We've faced difficult tasks but managed to get through it.  Our role this year especially was to   my our principle, teachers and students who need help and most importantly is to become good role models to our younger  generation in Saint Pius X. We will always treasure my time here at Saint Pius. Here is a short film of the year 8's. Farewell SPX

My Best Writing 2015 - Anthony

Sailing at Kohimarama Beach
The day of  sailing had finally arrived. My class went together with Room 6. They got the chance to take part in sailing as well. I was very excited.  Once we arrived  a couple of yachts were lined up. Once Reuben had  finished describing how the yacht works, we got into pairs. Luckily my partner was  Christopher. We each grabbed  a yacht and dragged  to the shore .

Then we prepared the yachts for the sea.  The ocean  seemed dangerous. I jumped into the boat and started sailing to the point. At first it  was scary but it slowly got better.  I slowed down to wait for the others because I was ahead of them. So I waited and waited until Seuati catched up so then I started to sail again.

Then when I got back to the shore, Christopher went. I saw him struggling so I encouraged  him.  My legs were cold so I sat down and covered it  with sand until chris came back. I saw chris ahead of them when they returned back. It was exciting because when chris came back we were allowed to go together .

Finally Reben said we are done. Then we got changed and settled down and Reben gave us a certificate.

My Best piece of writing 2015 - Folauhola

On Thursday morning my class had the opportunity to participate in sailing. We were divided into 2 groups. The first group left from school at 9:00am. The second group had to met us at Kohimarama Beach at 12pm. Sailing was at Kohimarama, near the yacht club.

Most of my class had never been sailing before. Our transport was the Sacred Heart Van.  There were 12 students who were in group 1. We finally made it to the yacht club. I couldn't wait any longer, so I grabbed my gear and jumped off the van. We met our instructor Reuben.

6 sailing boats had caught my eye. Our first task was to  set up the yacht.  We were paired up and each one of us had to chose a yacht. Before we could start, we had to put on our safety gear, to keep us safe. We dragged our sailing boat down the path walk and into the beach. The girls were up first to sail.

We had to sail to the tilly that was anchored to the sea floor, that area was the deepest. After coming last, I was enjoying. My partner and I took turn and it was turning out great, until we went together. When we reached to the deep side, my side was facing downwards to the water and water was coming into our boat. We were both scared and nervous that our boat would flip over.

It’s was too windy and we couldn't control our boat so we let it go and all of sudden we were in the sea. The sea was deep and I was nervous because usually when I’m at the beach my feets are always on the ground. Luckily Reuben came with his boat and told us how to flip over the boat.

It was time to say goodbye. I wasn't ready to stop, I wanted more. By the time we started  packing our gear, we met the second group who made it to the yacht club just in time.

My Sailing Experience - Alecia Haiosi

Screenshot 2015-11-16 at 11.27.04 AM.png
It was a very sunny day, with a clear blue sky. This was going to be the first day of our Activity Days and I was certain to make the most of it. Everyone was so excited. Lucky for me, there were only ten people in my group, otherwise we would of never fit in the van. The first group had already had their turn and when we arrived they were their at the Yacht Club.

When we hopped out we were greeted from our other classmates. After our reunion the first group hopped into the van and waved goodbye. When they left we all got prepared. We were then greeted by our instructor Ruben. Everyone received their safety gear and then we all walked down to the beach. There were at least six boats waiting down by the shore. We all surrounded the blue boat and Ruben started explaining to us how to use the boat.

There were 2 parts in the boat to work. The steering and the sail. The steering was at the back of the boat, it will control where the boat will go. The sail was at the front of the boat. To position it you need to either pull or release the rope. Ruben showed us how to work the sail properly. Soon enough we were all partnered up and we were taking our boats out into the ocean. I was partnered up with Rachel. Catherine was with Lupe, Pepe was with Joshua and Patrick was with Misiotei. I was in the purple boat. When we got out into the water it was so hard mainly because of the sail. We then got stuck for a while but we eventually got out into the ocean.

It felt so great, sailing. I had completely underestimated it. I thought that it would be so tiring and boring. But really it was a great feeling when the boat was going fast. We finally caught up with the other boats and Ruben was in the motorboat, with Oscar and Ierei. Ruben told us where to go and we followed. Surprisingly no one had fell out of the boat yet. Rachel then had to swap with Ierei. Rachel hopped out and Ierei hopped in. It was harder with Ierei mainly because she hadn’t had much experience.

After a long ride in the water Ruben then told us to go back to the shore. I was disappointed at first but then happy because I was extremely hungry, thirsty and tired. When the boats were close enough to the shore we all hopped out of the boats and dived into the water. Everyone was so happy in the water. We then pulled the boats back to shore and started cleaning up. After cleaning up everyone got changed and we ate our lunch. Everyone was silent and just enjoyed their lunch. I was so exhausted but happy at the same time. So all I could say about that day was that it was a really great experience.

My Experiance at Touch - Folauhola

IMG_3346.jpg
Our Third session of Touch was Fun. Girls and boys were separated but  learnt the same thing. I have to say that my class has shown some improvement in this session . Basically running, passing and tagging was the skill that impressed me today at Touch. We did a lot of training and learning so that we can be ready for the last final week of touch. Than we can play touch and give everything we've learnt since session one.  I enjoy trying out different sport because it’s may help us with other sports too. I have to say the girls won this time because we just had good strategies and were working very demanding.

Anthony's Choices Display

Cluster Culture Festival - Sonya

On Friday 6th November, 30 of our students including myself here are St Pius X Catholic School had the privilege to represent our school, at our very first Cluster Culture Festival. We had 4 different ethnicity groups including : Samoan, Tongan ,  Cook Island , and Maori.

We were all united with the Liturgical Dance. We told the story of our school by dance. Our story commenced when the Holy Faith Sisters arrived into New Zealand and started our school. This  is when the Maori people arrived. Our Maori Group performed beautifully. It was a great start to the dance. The dance then concludes onto the Cook Island group (performed by Aurora), The Samoan group, and ends off with the Tongan.
We were all reunited with the Liturgical Dance.

I was relived and happy that it was over. All of our hard work and late practises paid off. At first I was definitely anxious. I felt proud of everyone including myself. After performing we all gathered together and watched the other schools perform.
I  was exhausted and could not believe that it was over.

PAT Test Reflection - Folauhola

This morning was our PAT maths test. I was feeling nervous and shaken . This is the second time I’ve done PAT test online. I personally think that online tests are easier and fast.. There were 41 questions in the test. This morning’s test was not that bad because I’ve practised it before and found out how I got the answer.
At the end of the test I think I did well as well as everyone.

E Asttle Reflection - Folauhola

IMG_3095.JPG

During the Writing E- Asttle Test  all I could think about is using the 7 elements in my writing. But somehow I thought of the words that were best to use. I tried my best in my writing, even though I was coughing. I finally managed to finish my writing on time. I was very proud of myself.

Kiwi Sport : Folauhola

IMG_3111.JPG
Today was  our second session of  Touch, It  was very different. I  learnt that at beginning of the game you have to tap the ball  on the ground to start and when you are about to pass the ball. Touch is a  very difficult  sport for me because I’ve never played it. I love playing touch because it helps me with other sports too like Netball. I am looking forward for the next session next week !

Touch

Today at our second touch session , we were taught  how to draw and pass the ball. We learned how to share the ball with   others  in our team.  For next time we need to work on moving around more. I can’t wait for the next session.

Alecia's Big Race

We made our way across the road to the Seventh Day Adventist church in our houses. Tui’s, Gecko’s, Kea’s and Kiwi’s. I was in Tui’s with Jane, Frank, Justin, Valensia, Pepe and my sister Sonya. They were all classmates of mine. When we made it their we all sat down. When we were settled Mr Slade finally said with excitement, “Welcome everyone to St Pius X’s Cross Country for 2015!”

I could not contain my excitement! I was very excitement for this years Cross Country mainly because of the route that we were running. There were my Aunt's family and my Grandpa. Tui’s were red so we wore the colour red. While Gecko’s were green, Kiwi’s were yellow and Kea’s were blue. Each house would get house would get points for organisation and sportsmanship. We would also get points for the best chant and who would come first, second, third, fourth and fifth.

The first group were the Rm’s 1 and 4. Then it would be Year 7 and 8. I was in Year 7 so I was up next. We got our kids organised and they went to the start line. “Bang!” Went the 2 blocks and they headed off. They left and then Mr Slade asked the Year 7 and 8’s to come forward. With my heart pounding out of my chest I stepped up to the start/finish line. “1, 2, 3 GO!” Mrs Tui shouted and we were off I knew that I shouldn’t run too fast otherwise halfway through the race I would be way too tired. So instead I kept a steady past.

We were halfway through the first round and there were only a few people in front of me. I was going for my second round when I heard a familiar voice. I looked around and then there I saw him. My Dad was standing right there cheering me on. At that moment I was very happy because I thought that my father was not going to come. But I guess that he had a chance to come.

I was so excited that it gave me a boost and I was able to go a little bit faster. During my second round I just thought of how proud that I am. But before I knew I was nearly finish with my second round and going onto my third round. During my third round I was getting a little unstable but was hanging in there. When going down hill I just ran the whole way and eventually I was nearly at the finish line.

When I made it their I was so relieved and proud of myself! It is because I completed the track and nearly jogged the whole way. When I went to Mrs Williams I found out that I came first out of the Year 7 girls! I was so proud of myself and that just made me jump up and down feeling proud. My Dad came up and hugged me. I told him that I came first and he told me how proud he was of me.

Then after that the race was nearly over and everyone just sat down and relaxed. But it wasn’t over yet cause we still had our chant battle left. So how it went was that Mr Slade was thinking of a number between 1 - 20. Which ever house guess the number closes to Mr Slade’s number then they will go first. Then they will pick the next house to go. So kiwi’s went first, I really liked their chant and everyone clapped and cheered.

But next they picked us I was very nervous. We practiced very hard to get it right. When we started I felt myself becoming more confident and didn’t feel nervous anymore. Our chant was over and everyone just clapped continuously . We then chose the Gecko’s to go next. Then the Kea’s, it was up to the parents to choose who had the best chant.

When they finished voting Mr Coakley rallied up the votes. I was so nervous because I really wanted us to win. The suspense was killing me and I just couldn't wait any longer! He announced it and eventually... Tui’s won the chant battle!! We were so happy and over the moon with happiness. It was the Tui’s who came first, second the Kiwi’s, Third Kea’s and Fourth Gecko’s.

But the house that won the whole thing was the house that had the most points. Eventually that was Kiwi’s! Our buddy house. We were very happy for them. After this the race was over and everyone packed up. Then everyone went to their classes and relaxed.

After that race I felt so tired and sore but very joyful as well! Tired obviously because of the race. I was sore because of all the practice that we had. I was very joyful because all the hard work payed off. My highlight was when I crossed the finish line. This is because I knew that I had accomplished the race and that I had made my Dad proud.

Now I can’t wait for next year!

Misiotei's Response to Sean

Sean was telling us about how he got interested in sharks. He got interested in sharks by watching shark week on discovery channel when he was three years old. He told us how to kill a shark, it was called shark fining.  He said when you capture a shark cut of their fins and chuck the body back into the sea so that it can suffocate and die. It looked like that he knew a lot about sharks because he was confident about what he was saying.

Airui Mai - By Aurora

07.08.15 Airiu Mai

Today the Cook Island group from my school (SPX) went to the Glen Innes library to present a presentation for Cook Island senior citizens. I had a lovely time and I would like to thank Mrs Jeanny for preparing this for us and I would also thank the community for having us there.

Sonya's Netball Tournament Recount

Whistle’s blown everywhere, short skirts worn, &  balls thrown everywhere. Yesterday the year 8 & 7 team went to the  netball tournament. It was a indescribable experience. It started off with a cold and cloudy day. I was so nervous my teeth shook wildly. The other teams looked very experienced and intimidating.

The day started off with the year 7’s first game, which in my opinion was a awesome way to start the day. Our year 8 team had alot of time to get ready for our first team, while we waited we watched a male match. It was quite different and it looked fun. A couple of minutes later our first game was going to commence. So we all rushed to the court to start the game.

In total we had 4 games, plus the 1 night game.  I especially liked meeting new people & mixing with different schools. I couldn't resist but to feel nervous throughout the games and day. I had to make sure that  my nerves did not affect the game. I played as hard as I could, which is all that mattered.

I enjoyed myself, and I hope everyone else did. The beautiful, rough day ended off with a frozen drink. Which was what we all needed. I will always cherish this  day, and the honour of playing with my friends.

The Exoskeleton Seahorse

I have a exoskeleton, I don’t have scales but I have bony plates. I have a curly tail, I have a long thin snout that points down, when I find food I suck it up through my snout. I can change into different colours very quickly, I live in the shallow weedy areas. When it's winter I quickly go to the deeper water to escape from the rough weather. I am a very poor swimmer, I have excellent eyesight and I am able to work independently on either side of my head! So that means I can look forwards and backwards at the same time!

Joshua's Hockey Experience

Today we had wonderful session playing Hockey, Hockey is not a popular sport here in New Zealand maybe but for me it is not. Room 7 was all in the Hall, when we were settled we saw our Hockey Instructor ( Unknown ). I think that he is really good at playing Hockey.

After that he was separate us into groups , well I was in group #1 and the rest were split up into groups. After that we had a warm-up, the warm-up was to run from one side to the other. After that we were all tired from running from one side to the other. Next we had to bear crawl from one side to the other, that game was sort of boring and tiring because you had to crawl with your knees up.

Later on the instructor told us to go and stand next to where the hockey bats were, the instructor told us few rules what to do and not do with the bats because it can hurt someone real hard. After that the instructor told us to practise some skills with the hockey bat so we can start learning more tricks with the hockey bats. After that he told us that we should have a hockey game, so we were split up into 2 equal groups so we coud play the game. We had to to play a hockey game and whoever wins, was the winners of the day.

After that we all had to say a big thanks to our instructor for coming to our school to teach us hockey, he will be coming into our school for the next 4 weeks to 6 weeks to teach us how to play hockey.
I really enjoyed my first lesson of playing Hockey!!

Rachel's Hockey Experiance

IMG_2479.JPG

On a Wednesday morning, we had our first kiwi sport for Term 3, Hockey. Room 7 was the first class to begin with the Hockey Session. We head into the hall because it was raining outside. The Instructor split us into 3 groups.  First we started with warm ups before we begin. Running to the end of the hall was the first warm up we did. Following on we did monkey crawls. Afterwards we begin to start with the skills, first was the Marble. We started to do competitions as well, to see who would get the most score of doing the balancing the ball on the stick. One student got 101. From then we got into 2 groups because we were going to play a game of Hockey. He calls a number and that amount of people have to run and try get the ball into the goal net. At the end he calls everyone to come in, my group was trying to get the ball into the other goal net because we haven’t had a score yet. Our Session had ended, we all said “Thank you” to the instructor.

Salote's Hockey Experience

IMG_2479.JPGFirst time playing Hockey and it was amazing, I loved it. I was so excited to play hockey, at first I thought it will be boring. After doing the warm ups I was ready to carry on, got a Hockey stick and ball and it was time to practice. Learning all the drills and rule about Hockey was awesome, playing hockey and challenging others feels like I already knew how to play Hockey. Hockey is an amazing sport to play, can’t wait for the next practice.

Frank's Hockey Experiance

In the morning, Room 7 witnessed a new sport to the school called Hockey. I was looking forward to Hockey because I wanted to know more of the sport. It hit the time of 9:45 and we all lined up outside the hall. The instructor told us to come inside and place ourselves down.

We placed ourselves down and waited for the other people to come. We started our kiwisport with a warm - up. Our first warm - up was a relay. Next we moved on to the monkey crawl. It was difficult to find our grip because it the floor is slippery. Later, the instructor told us to stand next to the hockey stick.

He told us our to hold the grip and the rules in the hockey. After we got that, the instructor directed us to grab a ball and find a space to yourself. Then, instructor taught us some hockey dribbling moves. Then we moved on to a challenge.

We had to hit the ball with the hockey stick as much as we could within a minute. I managed to get 62, that was my high score. With a few minutes left, we played a game. It was fun and dangerous because everyone swung the hockey stick at each other.

I had a really good time. The End

Vicious Shark

I have a huge body I have been  seen in Australia. I am vicious , I have large sharp teeth and also strong jaws  and a tough  body.  Beware I will come and attack you in the ocean.  I am a shark.

Outstanding Performance

The first week of the holiday’s was a big week for me because I was training for our Bill McLaren Rugby final.  Everyday was training.  Friday was the big  day.

On Friday morning my dad and I went to the Orakei Domain.
Once we arrived, I rushed to the changing room to put on my Rugby uniform on.  I was very nervous, however, I had to proceed outside to some warm up with the boys.

It hit 11:30 and the whistle blew and we kicked off, we started chasing the ball and my friend did a massive hit and we started doing rucks.   Later we had a penalty and we were close to the try line our captain Sione Kau tap the ball, passed the ball to my friend and he broke through their line and scored a perfect try.

The time was running out fast, before we knew it,  we only had 12 minutes left, we had another penalty and we were close to the line, our captain tapped the ball and passed it to me, I went under their legs and scored a fantastic try. My friend Bono did the conversion kick and he got it in and it was Halftime!

We had 2 minutes for a  break, we talked about our defence and our  plan, the ref blew his whistle because time was up and it was south turn to kick. They kicked off and we made a lots of errors during the rest of the game, we scored 2 tries, Not knowing that there was only 12 minutes left. The south team kicked the ball and my friend Brandon, blocked the kick and took the ball, and ran off to the try line.

We had 3 more minutes left and they were close to our try line, we kept on tackling to avoid them scoring a try . We gave South lots of penalties and we only had 45 seconds before full time. It was their fifth penalty we gave them and they tapped the ball and gave it to their winger, they scored their first try. After their conversion kick the ref blew his whistle. We were screaming and cheering loudly. Full Time score 31-5.

We went back to our changing room and sang our spartan song. After that we started to singing a tongan song “E otua”. After our singing we went to the steps and a former All Black called out, Bill McLaren East team to come up and get their medals, when we went up to get our medals our coach called out our names to sing our Spartan song. We were the champions and won two years in a row and the Player of the Tournament was Sione Kau Lokeni.
